The Best Time of a Summer Day

Is this time.

Photobucket

When the sun shines through the trees and the air is all glowy. It makes me want to sit on the porch steps with my sweets, sip some lemonade, and enjoy every moment of the closing day. For the record, we've never sipped lemonade together on our porch, but doesn't it just seem like a nice thing to do?

And then there was this beauty of a rainbow a couple weeks ago. As our daughter would say, "Don't you just love Mother Nature?" Yes, yes, I do.

Herbs

Photobucket

I love my herb pots. They're pretty, smell delicious, super easy to maintain, and provide me with lots of culinary options.

When the weather warmed up, I primed, then spray painted some terra cotta pots and planted some herbs I found at Lowe's. The herbs were all around $2.99 and since it costs about that to buy a tiny little bunch of herbs at the store that lasts about a week, this is quite a deal. And, now I use fresh herbs almost daily when I cook...Bonus!

This year I chose mint, lemon thyme {seriously amazing}, oregano, rosemary, basil, and German thyme. It took a few weeks for them to fill out, but now I'm loving the way my steps look.

Royal

Have you ever had a week where you laughed and cried, learned, developed friendships, learned some more, got all crafty and silly, poured your heart out, ate an incessant amount of candy, hardly slept, then walked away knowing you were different {in a good way}? Well my friends, that was my last week.

I went to Girls Camp. This is when you all should be gasping and then applauding me for taking on such a daring endeavor. The truth is, I live for this stuff. I just can't get enough of the brilliance that pours out of the minds of teenagers, which is probably why I teach them for a living. It also doesn't seem that long ago that I was a teenager. I know I'm almost 30, but I really do feel that way. That was when my core took shape. Of course I'm different now after all the life experience I've had from the age of 18 to now, but if you could unwrap all the outer stuff, I really do believe my core wouldn't be much different than it was when I was 15. My memories of that time are quite vivid and I can recall a handful of experiences that molded me. I'm grateful for that time in my life, and the people who were a part of it.

Our theme was inspiring.

"Be True to the Royal Inside of You"

Which meant we wore crowns, tiaras, jewels, and continued to learn about our royal heritage.

And the girls learned about never, ever, ever settling for anyone less than a prince. Luckily, I learned this lesson a while ago, waited, then found and married my prince.

So you see, I know camp is for the girls, but it was for me too, Princess Amanda.

Note: This clown is waving at ME!!! He saw me acting all sports photographer wannabe and put his hand in the air just for little ol' me. I felt very special. Also, let it be known that I waited all night to get the infamous butt pat photo. Well, maybe it's not infamous, but it's definitely a staple in this sport and my patience was rewarded when I finally got it. Score!

Baseball is special to me. Mostly because it's what my big brother played growing up. My mom would cart us girls around to his practices and games. I detested this because baseball {and football, and basketball, and...you get the idea} was boooooooorrrrrring. I didn't get it and games seemed to last FOOOREEEVAH {Sandlot reference}. The most exciting part of the experience was finding two quarters in my mom's purse so I could buy myself a fun dip at the snack shack. Insane excitement I tell you!

But then one day things changed. Not sure what did it, but the universe shifted and I actually enjoyed going to my brother's games. I used to keep track of stats, cheer him on, and get real proud {the kind where I would beam and my heart would thump a little faster and I'd quietly say to myself "that's my brother"} when he'd make a fab play, or get on base. Good times.

So I love baseball. I love how American it is. I love the history of it. I love the tradition. It bleeds authenticity, has a heart that pumps, and a voice that sings, shouts, and cheers. And best of all, I think of my brother when I watch a game. The same brother who I believed with all my heart would one day make it to the big leagues.

Summer Is...

parades on the 4th, or Pioneer Day, or Terrace Days, or South Ogden days, or any other day we decide to block off roads so our community can celebrate, watch, cheer, and wave our beautiful flag!

The 4th

We didn't have the kids this year for the 4th {sadness}, but we made the best of it, and went with the fam to the cute little town of Huntsville for breakfast, a parade, and festivities.

One word...Sandlot.

What do you do when all these hats are just hanging around on display?
Why, you try them on of course, no matter how ridiculous you may look.

Summer Is...

Big Baby everyday, everywhere we go, all day long.

Big Baby {her name, not just description} has become an all encompassing presence in our lives, especially with the freedom of summer all around us. Wherever our daughter goes, Big Baby must also go. Whatever she does, Big Baby must also do. Whatever she wears...you get the idea.

The cutest thing is when I hear our daughter talk to Big Baby, and she is saying things I say to her. It's amazing to witness the influence I have on this adorable little girl. It also puts a lot of pressure on me to be the example she deserves to have in her life.
